A distinctive feature of white dammar resins is their transparency and subtle aroma with pronounced citrus notes. Natural church incense “Dammar” burns without residue or soot, releasing fragrant white smoke. Dammar resin can be burned at home using a censer, oil lamp, or aroma lamp. It melts while releasing a white, fragrant smoke, reminiscent of balsamic frankincense, but gentler. Even a small piece can fill an entire room with aromatic smoke. Dammar resin can be used alone or blended with other resins (benzoin, copal, frankincense, myrrh, elemi). A piece can also be placed in a tealight. Dammar is the name of several soft resins imported from East India. They are exuded by certain deciduous species from the Dipterocarpaceae family. The best grades come from Sumatra and Batavia. Typically sold as small, nearly colorless chunks, with a glassy break and rough, sometimes opaque surface. Dissolved in turpentine, the resin is used as varnish. It is widely used in paints, coatings, and materials for fine arts. It strengthens artworks and protects them from environmental damage. Paints with dammar become vibrant and dry faster. Nitrocellulose varnishes with dammar acquire a special gloss and polish well. The resin creates a clear, strong finish and has long been used in photography, glossy paper, and printing. Treated surfaces gain lightfastness and do not yellow over time.
How to use: Place a heated charcoal in a censer. Once glowing, add a piece of resin beside or on top. Avoid paper or plastic. Alternatively, use an oil lamp with a floating wick and a special metal holder ("spider"). Heat will melt the resin and release aromatic smoke.
