Copal is a natural resin, similar in appearance to amber, obtained primarily from tropical trees of the legume family. Harvested through tapping the trunks of wild-growing copal trees and also collected from the ground. When a piece of resin smolders on charcoal, it produces a rich, pleasant, resinous aroma with hints of pine and citrus. The quality of frankincense is determined by its transparency—the more transparent, the higher the quality and value. To gauge the amount needed, heat a small quantity on foil until smoke appears. Excessive smoke is unnecessary, as the scent is potent; a small amount suffices. Alternatively, ignite a piece of copal, then extinguish the flame—the resulting fragrant smoke is ample. In ancient times, it was valued like gold and used medicinally for wound healing. Church incense has the remarkable property of suppressing microbes in the air, water, and human body. Water infused with frankincense was used for stomach and intestinal ailments. Today, while ion-exchange resins are used for water purification, they lack the healing properties of true frankincense. Nonetheless, using natural resins serves more as a remedy for the soul than the body. Healing the soul can alleviate physical ailments. To burn frankincense, which comes in solid chunks, you'll need incense, charcoal, and a censer or lamp with a special holder.
